Greener Idalsa: Diminishing residues.

The permanent preoccupation of Idalsa to reduce residues, following the best technologies available than allows to continue contributing the sustainable development of the activity of recovery of aluminum, has given to a new step signing an Agreement of Collaboration with the Canadian company KPM (Kingston Process Metallurgy Inc.) whose recent projects on stabilization, recycling and valuation of secondary materials were analyzed in REWAS 08.

The Agreement with KPM takes care of to examine, to analyze, to simulate and to propose to Idalsa alternative processes of R+D that improve the yield of the present facilities.

KPM is staffed by highly competent professionals and scientists, and has direct access to leading edge analytical instruments, uses powerful computational thermochemistry software, and has a variety of laboratory and pilot scale equipment.

In the facilities of Idalsa has been working Boyd Davis*, a specialist in computer thermochemistry of KPM, to understand our technological and operational processes and to parametrizar the indicators of the reaction mechanisms. The obtaining of the present information allows to fit to the reality the modellings of the different alternatives from improvement. As objective associated it is the greenhouse effect gas reduction and the protection of the ozone layer.

*Boyd Davis is co-founder of KPM. He is a graduate of Queen’s University with a B.Sc. in Engineering Chemistry and a Masters and Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering. Boyd has worked as a consultant since 1998 in the area of computational thermochemistry and process development, before founding KPM. Boyd is also an adjunct professor in the Mining Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Departments at Queen’s, where he collaborates with professors, lectures, and supervises thesis projects. He has authored over 20 technical papers. Boyd is active with the Metallurgical Society of CIM and was awarded the Past Presidents’ Memorial Medal in 2001 for service to the society.
